The Three Civilizational State Solution for The West Part I: Introduction

The typical Zoomer within the America First/ MAGA movement will almost certainly consider himself a nationalist. Nationalism is generally understood to mean an affinity towards a particular nation and its interests. A nation is defined as a group of people with a shared language, history, culture, and ties of kinship. Some might even describe themselves as some sort of regionalist, meaning that they have a more intimate affinity for a particular region of a nation than for the nation as a whole. This latter sentiment tends to be more prominent amongst our Southern American brethren, for better or worse.However, most would not (yet) describe themselves as civilizationalists, meaning those who draw the plurality or majority of their identity from a shared civilization rather than a nation or region. But the transition of administrative emphasis from the nation-state to the civilization-state is inevitable with advancements in technology, something that will be explained in further detail below.The nation-state as we generally understand it is a relatively modern creation as it was only made possible by the technological and scientific progress brought on by the Industrial Revolution. Before this, the most relevant level of political organization for the vast majority of the Western population was the locality, whether it be a Duchy, Kingdom, Principality, or city-state. The average Frenchman would identify as Occitian, Brittanian, Parisian, etc. before calling himself French prior to three centuries ago. This was largely due to the simple fact that transportation and communications technology basically barred the average person from traveling to the next province, forget the next country. Indeed, the average pre-industrial person did not venture further than a thirty-mile radius from the spot they were born their entire lives.However, with the Industrial Revolution and its suite of technological advancements, the world started to become functionally smaller fairly quickly. With the railroads, people in Europe were able to travel between any city of note in their country within one or two days. With the telegraph, messages could reach someone a thousand miles away within a matter of hours whereas before it would take ages for a carrier horse or pigeon to physically traverse that distance. With this, the nation started to supersede the locality as the most relevant level of political organization, with national capitals able to exert substantive political control over their entire national realm. Without this, nationalism as we know it would not have been able to take off in any meaningful way, not for a lack of political and moral willpower, but rather a lack of simple logistical capacity.Since the First Industrial Revolution, there have been three more with differing areas of emphasis, the fourth and current one centered around information technology. This, combined with near-supersonic air travel, instantaneous communication through the internet brought about by sid information technology, and high-speed rail networks in the most developed areas, is making the world even smaller and even faster than ever before. As a result, the relevant level of political and economic organization in an increasing number of areas has transitioned from the national to the international or civilizational. Increasingly, those in the upper echelons of the value-added chain or policy-making find themselves interacting with those who do not have the same passport as they do. Increasingly, the world, and especially the Global North, is coalescing into economic and political supranational blocs in order to take advantage of the greater economies of scale these blocs offer.Eventually, this coalescing will result in what is called the civilization-state, which is a polity that encompasses an entire civilization and pursues the collective interests of that civilization above all else. Think the Roman Empire had it survived to the present. In fact, there is one political entity that can be described as a civilization-state: China. Ever since the First Emperor unified all of China and standardized their writing system twenty-two centuries ago, Chinese civilization has embarked on a slow journey of increased unification. The most recent example of this has been the CCP’s strong and persistent insistence on the use of Mandarin in place of the hundreds of regional dialects that currently exist. All this and much more have been employed by the current manifestation of the Chinese state to unify an entire civilization into a cohesive, cooperative superorganism that will challenge the West’s central position on the world stage. We must prevent this eventuality at all costs.Now, Western civilization is noticeably more varied, diverse if you will, than Chinese civilization is. This means that in a civilization-state scenario, the West would need to be represented by more than one polity.Firstly, many consider there to be a significant enough difference between the Eastern Orthodox world and the rest of Europe and its offshoots for the Orthodox world to be considered outside Western civilization. At any rate, the Orthodox world would need its own civilization-state, a Neo-Byzantium if you will.Secondly, because there was a very significant self-selection process during the mass migration of Europeans to the four settler countries, the residents of the Anglosphere are noticeably different from their parent populations in Continental Europe. The more religious and extraverted nature of the six Anglosphere countries compared to Continental Europe can also be used as a justification to establish separate civilization-states for these two groups of nations. This partitioning would then give us three Western civilization-states: Neo-Byzantium, a European Federation, and an Anglo Union.While many will think this to be a very unorthodox solution to some of the problems facing the West, which it most certainly is, so unprecedented are the existential problems facing the West that such out-of-the-box thinking is needed to save and preserve the West. In the next three parts, we will discuss the nature of each hypothetical civilization-state and the reasons behind the grouping.
