If you have scrolled X these past few days, your feed must have looked like a hall of mirrors. Every conservative pundit and mouthpiece was talking about the Somalian migrants in Minnesota who were recently exposed for funneling millions of taxpayer dollars into daycare centers that, by all appearances, did not serve any children.
At the center of this phenomenon is 23-year-old Nick Shirley, an independent journalist and YouTuber whose 42-minute exposé now has hundreds of millions of views online.
In his video, Shirley investigates Somalian-owned daycare facilities in the Minneapolis area. He visits places which are licensed to care for hundreds of children and are receiving millions of dollars in state funding. He arrives in the middle of the day, during what should be peak hours, and the windows are blacked out. The doors are locked; there are no children, and Shirley is promptly told to leave.
One location, the now infamous “Quality Learing Center” [sic] became the centerpiece of the scandal. The facility is licensed for nearly one hundred children and reportedly paid millions by Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program, but neighbors told Shirley that they had not seen a child at the daycare in years.
This was not in just one or two cases. Shirley and his team uncovered over $110 million in payments to similar vacant facilities.
Americans were outraged. Hardworking families across this nation struggle to find affordable childcare. Parents work overtime just to afford basic needs for their families. Then, they find out that a program meant to assist the needy is being exploited by legal migrants who hardly, if at all, speak our language, do not assimilate into our culture, and do not respect the people that welcomed them in.
Minnesota officials have been scrambling to attempt some form of damage control. Governor Tim Walz, former running mate of former Vice President Kamala Harris, dismissed the initial uproar as “misinformation,” even as members of US Congress pressed his office for answers and federal agencies opened inquiries.
He has continued obfuscating in recent days, accusing anyone concerned with the scandal of “white supremacy.”
Democrats are not the only ones scrambling. Republican Congressman and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who represents one of the districts exposed in the video, has expressed support for deporting the offending criminals. However, records of past town hall meetings held in his district show that he was complicit in the cover up. When voters raised the issue of Somali foul play, he accused them of racism.
When a 23-year-old YouTuber can uncover fraud that a billion-dollar bureaucracy missed, it raises a question: what is the government and media doing? Countless conservative media figures and politicians, including Vice President JD Vance and Donald Trump, Jr. expressed outrage on X at the situation. Why aren’t they actually doing something about it instead of tweeting?
What Nick Shirley exposed was not a glitch or mistake - it was an intentional outcome of a corrupt system curated to avoid taking accountability at the expense of its constituents: the American people, who burden the bill but reap none of the benefits. Minnesotan officials turned a blind eye to the corruption transpiring under their noses to avoid spurning a foreign voter bloc, leaving dutiful, tax-paying Minnesotans none the wiser.
Minnesota is a snapshot, not an outlier. It’s a freeze frame of what is happening across this nation. As Americans barely get by, our tax dollars are used to fuel the spending habits of foreigners who take advantage of us. It stands to reason that a country that can’t be bothered to protect its tax dollars—to simply administer its laws—cannot protect its culture, borders, or destiny either.
If Americans don’t receive deserved oversight and accountability from this administration, no deterrent shall be established, and what is happening in Minnesota will continue to transpire from coast to coast. Nick Shirley didn’t just unmask a one-off scandal. The fraud local to Minnesota is symptomatic of a deeper malaise that has struck the nation, one which sees politicians place the appetites of capricious newcomers before the trust of their long-settled constituents.
